This week it’s onwards with privileged pup’s choice of fabulous places to hang out. After a good run on the agility course, he was in need of some refreshment so where better to do so than in his new favourite local pub- The Lyon Inn, Westbury on Severn. Please welcome to the Lady Janey sofa, owner Chris Light to tell us more about what The Lyon Inn has to offer.

I first met Chris last year when I popped over to Blaisdon House B & B, the guest house he also runs with his wife Sue, and what really struck me was how hard they both work to ensure the best of experiences for their guests. Nothing has changed on that score with both Sue and Chris working harder than ever to delight their customers since the opening of their fabulous new gastro pub, The Lyon Inn, in May.

The transformation of the run down Red Lion to the new look Lyon Inn was no mean feat. Chris and Sue had to start from scratch but amazingly the renovation took just two months to complete. After years of exasperation building our own house and trying to find decent traders, I asked Chris what his secret was. Hard work obviously but as he and Sue had already worked on renovating both the holiday let they own and Blaisdon House B & B, they had build up a list of reliable contractors. It was all go too with all hands to the pump at any one time during the renovation and ‘Up to 15 people at a time in there.’ Hats off to them; think that having so many people on site would have finished me off during our build. But then again, good traders were something we found hard to find.

The Lyon Inn is ‘All about friendly service, a good atmosphere and diligently prepared fresh food on a menu that changes regularly’ and staff are passionate about serving “Fresh food, freshly cooked’. From craft ales to the finest butter and cheese, all ingredients are sourced locally and each dish cooked from fresh with everything made in house. Even the scotch eggs are home made and the coffee is roasted locally in nearby Cinderford. As well as being very family friendly, The Lyon Inn also warmly welcomes our favourite four legged friends and is a firm favourite of privileged pup- especially with Bonios on the bar and lots of lovely fresh water available.

Chris loves life at The Lyon Inn and states the favourite part of his job as being the ‘Staff, people and customers’ with the worst just being having to move ‘Heavy barrels of beer.’ Chris and Sue rarely have time to relax as they are on the go from first thing in the morning at Blaisdon House B & B to last orders at The Lyon Inn. However I did discover that as well as maintaining a little hobby stemming from his first job as a French polisher, to relax Chris does share my love of fine wine!

Talking of wine, in addition to local hand pulled ales, there is SUCH an impressive wine list at The Lyon Inn. It’ll be a sacrifice but I’m sure I’ll be able to work my way through them all. There’s also a wide range of artisan gins and whiskies and even a little cocktail menu – bliss!

Currently Chris and Sue still have their hands full with projects at The Lyon Inn such as taking away the old 70’s fireplace and discovering not only a Victorian one but by delving deeper, have revealed an even more impressive 17th century fireplace with bread oven. However in the future, they are hoping that the pub will be firmly established in the area and are considering looking into the possibility of developing the rooms above the pub back into B & B accommodation. This I can’t wait for- a pub with rooms! Life just doesn’t get much better than that.

If you haven’t already discovered The Lyon Inn then it’s well worth a visit for a warm welcome, good food and excellent service. Thanks to Chris for taking the time to chat to me today for Saturday Spotlight. If you’d like to find out more about The Lyon Inn then there’s lots of information on the website and also on Facebook Twitter and Instagram. In addition for details on how to book rooms at Blaisdon House B & B then click here to view the website or check out the Twitter page.

Until next week everyone! Cin cin!

Lady Janey x
