What better way to celebrate a birthday than by trying out one of the most exciting new restaurants to come to Cheltenham in recent months, Giggling Squid! It wasn’t the best of starts but how was the rest of the experience? Read on to find out.

Friendliness of Service 8/10

On arrival, we were greeted politely but then informed we were too early for our 8pm booking so would have to come back. When booking it is made clear that tables will only be held for 15 minutes so I’d ensured that we arrived in plenty of time at 7.45pm. Unfortunately there is no bar waiting area at Giggling Squid so we had to leave the restaurant and return later. This wasn’t really a problem, it was just unexpected and it was easy to find an alternate place to get some pre dinner drinks but it did mean that the evening didn’t really start off on the right foot.

However from the moment we returned the service was excellent, staff were welcoming, friendly and polite and our personable and attentive waiter looked us after well.

Efficiency of Service 9/10

Apart from the hiccough on arrival, the booking had been relatively hassle free although you can only book online for up to 4 people and have to ring the restaurant to make reservations for larger groups. The booking was followed up by an email and there was a further telephone call on the day to check on the reservation. Following the visit I also received an email asking for feedback with regard to the experience at Giggling Squid. This was music to my customer service – tuned ears as it’s always lovely when companies encourage customer feedback.

Food and drink orders were processed quickly and efficiently and questions regarding the dishes answered without hesitation.

Speed of Service 9/10

It was a really busy evening in the restaurant but once we were seated, the speed of service was excellent. We did not have to wait long before a drinks order was taken and before the waiter returned to take our food order. In fact it was so timely that we needed a few minutes longer to peruse the range of fabulous dishes on the menu! Once orders were placed our starters sharing platters of hand-cut pork, salt and pepper squid, Thai chicken wings and spring rolls were delivered quickly and demolished even quicker – hence no photo for these even though they were amazing but I just couldn’t get in there quick enough!

 Quality of Product 9/10

The dishes at Giggling Squid were mouthwateringly good. I opted for a Thai green curry while others in my group chose the pork ribs, massaman curry and Hake with dry green curry, with brown rice and prawn crackers being the perfect accompaniment. As a side note, the sticky rice was a little too much on the sticky side but still very enjoyable regardless. Prices were a bit on the steep side but the quality of the dishes served was first class and the house red wine got the seal of approval. Perfect portion sizes but no room sadly for desserts even though the menu looked very tempting!

Overall experience 8/10

Giggling Squid was very busy and noisy so it was very hard to chat among friends and make ourselves heard and lots of tables are crammed into the space across two floors. However, although this did impact on our overall customer experience, it did not impact on the quality of customer service received. Service charge was automatically added to the bill but it’s made clear that you can have this removed if you wish. We didn’t choose to do so.

In summary, I absolutely love Thai food so was really looking forward to visiting Giggling Squid and was not disappointed at all by the service and the quality of the dishes, which were just fabulous; very well presented and a real taste sensation! The oriental decor is really pretty and If you’ve not been already, then it’s well worth checking out! I’ll definitely be back to try the tapas lunch albeit selfishly hoping that things are a bit quieter in the restaurant itself.

Where should I visit next week everyone? Please let me know in the comments.

Cin cin!
