Comparison sites make up 60% of new household polices with customers keener than ever to source the very best of deals. However, ComparetheMarket has just been fined £17.9 million pounds by The Competition and Markets Authority for keeping home insurance costs artificially high by preventing their insurers from advertising cheaper deals on other websites. ComparetheMarket strongly refute its findings. With revelations such as this undermining consumer confidence in price comparison sites, how can you be sure you’re getting the best insurance deals?
Shop around for insurance quotes
It’s advisable to use a variety of comparison sites as no single one cover the whole market for the best results in each product category. In addition, not all providers advertise via a comparison site so you may need to contact them directly. However tedious and time consuming it is; research is key!
Read the small print carefully on comparison sites
If something is too good to be true then it usually is so ensure you check what is (not) included in your policy before you sign on the dotted line. This can make all the difference if you need to make a claim. If you are unsure about the cover being offered then contact the provider directly to clarify. Unfortunately nothing is ever ‘simples.’
Double- check preferences on comparison sites
It’s worth double-checking your preferences when searching for insurance deals as excesses or monthly versus annual payments may impact on premiums. Watch out also for unwanted extras and any sneaky tick boxes, which may inadvertently be selected.
Consider quality as well as cost
It’s always worth trawling through a number of reviews as well as the insurance quotes themselves. Cheapest is not always the best with some not offering the level and standard of cover or customer service that you hoped for. Some insurance deals might include some nice little unexpected incentives such as a satnav, cashback or of course cinema tickets and cute little Meerkats.
Check out the whole list of suggested policies
The cheapest deals are not always at the top of the search results on comparison sites. You may need to scroll through the list to find the best deals depending on how results are ranked. Paying monthly rather than annually can make a big difference. For example paying monthly for car insurance can add up to 44%, and for home cover almost 50%.
We spend hours scouring the Internet for the best holiday deals but we don’t seem to have the same enthusiasm when obtaining insurance quotes where significant savings can just as easily be made. It’s well worth the effort and as they say, no pain, no gain. Good luck!
