Gin & Tea, what an intriguing combination! As soon as I heard about the opening of the new Memsahib Gin & Tea Bar in Cheltenham, I couldn’t wait to find out more. And wow oh wow! A visit to this Gin & Tea Bar is far more than just the chance to try a wide selection of aromatic gins and artisan teas; it offers an Anglo- Indian dining experience like no other.
The unique concept behind the creation of the Memsahib Gin & Tea Bar dates back to the British Raj period when many Anglo- Indian women, Memsahibs, who settled in Cheltenham brought with them new and exciting tastes and flavours. The tantalising infusion of Gins paired beautifully with a range of dishes which are taste sensations in themselves, takes the traditional Memsahib flavours to a whole new level in the Gin & Tea Tasting Menu.
On arrival we were presented with a lovely green chili and pepper tea with mint, kafir lime and lemon and a tasty mini poppadum, mango chutney and red onion salad amuse bouche. Once seated, we kicked off our tasting experience with a Pre-Nasta of Bombay Mix, Puffed Rice, Bhuna Masala and Onion Chaat.
This was quickly followed by Round One of the incredible tasting menu in the form of a Cucumber Gin Teapot paired with delicious Vegetable Samosas and Chutney. Sheer brilliance!
Tray Two of the Gin & Tea Tasting Menu consisted of a Sea Bass and Mix Bean Curry with Bengali Mustard or Garlic Cheese Slice and Tomato Chutney, paired beautifully with an Asian Ginger Chai Gin & Aromatic Tonic. There’s a vegetarian option for each course so we decided to try both versions and we weren’t disappointed.
This fabulous tray was followed by a refreshing Bombay Presidency Punch with crushed ice and served as the perfect accompaniment to a succulent Chicken Tikka and Baby Potato and Vegetable Chaat.
Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, the Centre of the Show was presented to us. This took the form of Indian Masala Gin & Pink Pepper Tonic, paired with a choice of Beef Keema or Malai Dall.
Last but not least was an exquisite Fig & Coconut Crumble served with a sweet Lady Sophia’s Martini. Wonder if they might name one after me?
With cosy armchairs you can just sink into, The Memsahib Gin & Tea Bar is a haven of comfort with its endearing homeliness firmly rooted in the history of the Memsahibs whereby they would host a welcoming feast in their own homes.
Innovative in its offering, The Memsahib Gin & Tea Bar even crafts its own gin in order to provide the ultimate Gin experience to each and every guest and ensure that the taste is nothing less than exceptional. Service from Ruth and Ella was indeed exemplary. They certainly know their Gin and with 55 varieties of Round the World Gins on offer, that’s no mean feat!
No time for dinner? Then worry not, you’re always welcome for a drink or two and it doesn’t need to be gin or tea. For the smaller appetite, there’s the Afternoon Chai, which adds a brilliant Indian twist to the traditional English afternoon tea or street food light bites in the form of a Memsahib picnic.
