Do you know what’s happening in your community? Would you like to be more informed and involved? Wherever you live, you’ll find that your local radio stations are there to do exactly that and Dean Radio 105.6FM, in the very heart of the Forest of Dean is no exception. On its first birthday, and as the newest and most excited recruit to the team, I headed down to the studio to find out more about Dean Radio and the service it offers.

Described as a radio station ‘by the people for the people,’ Dean Radio 105.6FM aims to bring the community together by sharing local stories, successes and events combined with the very best of great music and chat.

So what’s on offer on Dean Radio?

With quite possibly the widest range of music in the South West, there’s something for everyone on Dean Radio from the best of the hits right through the decades to the likes of reggae, brass, folk, punk, indie, soft rock, big band, electric and funk and soul. Wake up with Daren or Paddy Tracey, wile away the day with the best of Dean Radio Hits and travel home with Stu and Ian. Here’s the schedule if you’d like to take a closer look. If you like to be the first to know what’s happening in the Forest and beyond, don’t miss the Dean Magazine Show on Fridays between 6 and 8pm where the team will bring you all the latest news and events info plus lots of laughs with live chat and music.

Why choose Dean Radio?

When I asked the team why they loved working on Dean Radio and why they hoped people would tune in, here’s what they had to say:

“It’s like a real family, if you ever need anything, everyone jumps in to help.”

Roy Bardo, Roy’s Reggae Revolution Sundays 6-7pm

“It’s a great team and a great station”

Daren Green, Wake up with Daren, Les and Daniel on Mondays and Tuesdays, Paddy and Ghislaine Wednesday to Friday and Dan on Weekends from 8-10am

“I got involved with Dean Radio in January this year and in June I was given my own two hour drive time show. To say I was over the moon is an understatement. I love putting my show together, knowing that people are going to listen and hoping that they will be entertained. But the greatest thing about Dean Radio is the team of volunteers. They have all become my friends and it’s good to know that if I have a question someone is going to know the answer. Everyone brings a different talent to Dean Radio and without them the station wouldn’t exist.”

Stuart Foster, Taking You Home Mondays and Tuesdays 4-6pm

“I get a real buzz when I hear that people listen to Dean Radio in their homes and workplaces. Over the last year we’ve been able to share news of what’s happening around the Forest of Dean and give local communities, charities, fundraisers and musicians a platform they wouldn’t get anywhere else. Also I’m really chuffed at how new volunteers have learned new skills and become reporters and presenters and even started hosting their own shows.”

Dave Jury, Strike up the Brass Mondays 6-7pm and 1-2pm Sundays (repeat)

“The music on Dean Radio is so diverse and the people so friendly and supportive that doing my show reminds me of when I was a kid and playing my records with my mates in my room. Good times then and good times now.”

Ian Gow, The Metalmouth Radio Show, the very best in new and classic metal. Wednesdays 9-11pm

“I’ve been fortunate enough to be working for Dean Radio since day 1. I really enjoy putting my show together on a Sunday and love getting feedback (good or bad) about the show. I especially like it when we get a local singer or group down to play for us live. There is some great talent here in the Forest of Dean and it’s a real pleasure to promote this on a Sunday. I have also enjoyed co-presenting the Dean Magazine Show show from time to time. We have developed such a good team here and it’s great to work with different presenters on a busy show like the DMS.”

Clive Southerton, Soft Rock and Acoustic with Clive Sundays 4-6pm and 6-8pm Thursdays (repeat)

“I have been with Dean Radio from the start and have been producing & presenting the weekly Folk & Acoustic Music show; promoting and showcasing artists appearing locally and giving local artists a platform. On top of this, introducing listeners to music they probably won’t have heard before. I enjoy putting the program together and sharing the music I am keen on with others”

Chris Arscott Tuesdays 6-7pm and 2-3pm Sundays (repeat)

I’ll leave the final word to one of the Directors Jan who lets me into a little team secret to keep up morale and energy levels!

“I really like the range of music and the chance to get involved in the community and what’s happening. Oh and the chocolate, definitely the chocolate.”

Jan Gow, Live from the Jan Cave Wednesdays 7-9pm
